I am an engineer of landscape planning and ecology, I have two little daughters and I am at home at the moment. Since I can remember, words and numbers are coloured in my imagination. Since about 10 years I have known that "normal" people do not see letters and digits in colours. 5 years ago I incidentially found a newspaper article about synesthesia and I learned that my little "tick" has a name too. Normally I am hardly ever aware of it, but recently there was a little argument in my family during which I became very much aware of the synesthesia problem again: My mother gave a blue and a pink puppet to my daughters. The blue one was to be called Lena, which was very well consistent with my colour concept of the letters because the e, which is blue, dominates the word Lena very much. The pink puppet was to be called Lisa. Without thinking, I said "Nope, this does not fit, Lisa is a yellow name, Rosa would be a much better name for her!" (i and s are yellow letters while the o is red). My parents and brothers and sisters all looked bewildered; now they finally know that I am a synesthete! |
